If you’re a regular reader, you’ll know that I’m quite fond of bamboo; it’s strong, readily available, flexible, pleasing to the eye, blah blah, blah.
In 2003 I was living in a giant eyesore of a vulgar orange building in Tokyo’s western outskirts and I’d taken to walking along a tiny little-known path through a bamboo grove on my way to and from work.
One morning I remembered seeing a bamboo shoot poking out of the earth in the middle of the path and on my way back from work, some ten or so hours later, it had already grown substantially and was above knee level.
People who listened to me share this little anecdote generally responded with polite skepticism. “Are you sure it was the same stalk?” Yes, I was sure.
Anyway, back to the present and I’m always looking for video ideas and it occurred to me that it was spring and there were a number of bamboo groves near my home. And, this sentence is the segue from the background to the resulting video that I made.
